Indians are...

Indians is the general denomination for Native Americans except Eskimo. The name appeared thanks to Christopher Columbus who discovered America in 1492. When he landed America he thought this land was India. The general number of modern Indians is 30 million people, but such data was got in the middle of 60s of the past century.
Some people also use the term "redskin" to call Indians. This term is rather spread in the European mass culture but it has nothing to do with the colour of Indians' skin that have skin from white to swarthy colours. Such denomination comes from the tribe that was the first to have the contact with Europeans (with Vikings in 11th century and with Englishmen in 16th century). This tribe had the tradition to paint their faces and clothes with raddle. This tribe completely disappeared in 19th century.
The Indian languages are very different and there are 200 groups of languages. Some of them have similar characteristics but others have completely different pronunciation and grammatical norms.
Indians inherited knowledge, traditions, mythology and religion of the civilization of Maya, Aztecs and Incas. Indians got a lot of traditions that are carefully kept till nowadays as well as the traditions of worship.
Indians made great contribution to the world's culture and even cookery. For example thanks to Indians we have the possibility to taste chocolate (cacao), smoke tobacco, eat maize, etc.
