Ancient traditions of Indians

Ex facte traditions and customs of Indians may seem rather wild and sometimes even violent for the modern person. However it is necessary to consider them from another point of view and then it becomes clear that all rites and ceremonies had the practical use and were made to provide the possibility to survive.

So, the choice of totem was destined to make the person learn the behaviour of the animal that helped the Indian during wars and hunting. The calumet of peace was the connection and the contact of two enemies and the process of smoking allowed to calm down and to solve all problems in peaceful way.

There are also traditions the practical purpose of which is not understandable and it is necessary to think them over carefully, for example, the tradition of choosing the name. After all the investigators of the 16-17th centuries faced the problem that many Indians had the same names in one tribe not to mention in other tribes. But if you consider this fact carefully, you'll understand Indians used the same names to avoid marriages between relatives. The names of some Indians consisted of three names: the name of father, the name of mother and the proper name of the person.

There a lot of other traditions the purpose of which scientists investigate. But the majority of scientists agree that the majority of tribes managed to survive following the traditions.
